Frequently asked questions

+Can visitors use contactless cards on Dutch public transport?
Yes, OVpay works across much of the system. Use the same card or phone to tap in and out, and watch for separate check-in gates between operators.
+Do I need to rent a car?
Usually no for Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, Delft, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Maastricht. A car helps for rural routes, but parking and city driving are rarely worth it.
+Is cycling safe for tourists?
It can be, but only if you are comfortable in bike traffic. Use guided routes or parks first, keep out of fast commuter lanes, and never stop suddenly in the bike path.
+What is the easiest Schiphol transfer?
The train is fastest for Amsterdam Centraal and many Dutch cities. Taxis are useful for heavy luggage, late-night arrivals or hotels far from stations.
