Why trains are the default

The country is compact, stations sit close to city centers and intercity frequencies are high on the main routes. Amsterdam to Utrecht, Rotterdam, Delft, The Hague, Leiden and Haarlem are all easy by rail.

OVpay versus tickets

OVpay is simplest for many short trips: tap in and out with the same contactless card or mobile wallet. For planned day trips, compare the total fare against day tickets or regional passes.

High-value rail routes

Amsterdam to Haarlem for a calmer city and beach access.

Practical rule

If you are anxious about transport, buy simplicity. A slightly more expensive pass that prevents mistakes can be better than saving a few euros and losing time.
