Quick answer

The Netherlands is in the Schengen Area. Many visitors, including US tourists, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but your passport and border process still matter.

What changed recently

The Entry/Exit System is being introduced at Dutch borders in phases, including Schiphol. Non-EU passport holders may be asked to register passport data, facial image and fingerprints at self-service kiosks before passport control.

ETIAS is separate from EES. Dutch government guidance says ETIAS is expected in the last quarter of 2026 for visa-exempt travelers entering 30 European countries.

What to check before booking

  • Passport validity beyond your planned Schengen departure.
  • Whether your nationality needs a Schengen visa.
  • Your exact Schengen days if you have visited Europe recently.
  • Whether ETIAS has started by your travel date.
  • Border-control time if you land at Schiphol during peak arrival banks.
