Markt

Town hall at one end, Nieuwe Kerk at the other, market days in between.

Last updated June 12, 2026

Delft's main square, with a general market on Thursdays and an antiques and books market on Saturdays in season.

The square is a long rectangle rather than a plaza, and the effect of standing at the town hall end looking at the church tower is the reason Delft appears on so many itineraries. Terraces line both sides and are pleasant for exactly as long as the weather holds. The market days are worth planning around — a general market takes the whole square on Thursdays, and in the warmer months Saturdays bring antiques, books and bric-a-brac instead.

Highlights

  • Free and open at all hours
  • Thursday general market
  • Seasonal Saturday antiques market

Insider tips

  • Thursday is the busiest and the most interesting; a quiet square is a different place entirely.
  • The city publishes market days but not market clock times, so allow slack around the edges.

FAQ

Do I need to book Markt ahead?
For weekends, holidays and spring travel, yes. The Netherlands is easy to navigate, but high-demand tickets and good time slots sell out first.
Is this a good first-time visitor choice?
Yes, if it matches your route. We prioritize listings that solve a real planning problem, have clear visitor logistics and can be booked or verified before arrival.
