Strijp-S

The Forbidden City, opened up: design studios in old factory halls.

A Philips factory complex you once needed a badge to enter, now the district the city's reputation rests on.

For decades this was closed ground — employees only, hence the nickname. The halls are still standing and now hold Piet Hein Eek's studio, shop and restaurant under one roof, the Urban Shopper with around twenty independent retailers, an indoor skatepark, and bars in the old Ketelhuis. Most of the city's street art is here. The Trudo Toren rewards a glance upward: it is a tower block forested at every balcony, some 125 trees in all. Local trains stop at Strijp-S station, and it is an easy ride or walk from the centre.

Highlights

  • Former Philips factory city
  • Street art and studios
  • Own train station

Insider tips

  • Its own station means you can arrive here directly rather than via the centre.
  • The district is public and always open; the individual studios and shops are not.
