Weerribben-Wieden National Park

Reed beds, peat lakes and boat-in hamlets around the famous canals.

The peat-bog landscape wrapping the village, which our editors rate above the famous canals themselves.

This is what the region looked like before anyone came for the photographs: reed fields cut by hand, shallow peat lakes left by centuries of digging, and hamlets like Belt-Schutsloot, Wanneperveen and Kalenberg that you reach more easily by boat than by car. Marked cycling, walking and boating routes run through it, and the loop from the village via Scheerwolde into De Weerribben is a ride that repays a whole afternoon. It is also the obvious escape when the village strip is at its worst.

Insider tips

  • Go out here in the afternoon rather than fighting the canal-side path.
  • Rent from Wanneperveen or Belt-Schutsloot and come into the village from behind.
