Almost identical to July on the thermometer and noticeably different on the ground. The sea is at its warmest, the light has begun to shorten by nearly two hours across the month, and evenings acquire the first hint of the softer, lower sun that will define September. The country is at its most sociable: festival season is at full stretch, the terraces are permanent fixtures, and the water is full of people. Then in the last week the schools go back, the families leave, and the whole thing quietly deflates.

How busy, and what it costs
The two things that change most across the Dutch year, and the two most people plan around.
Crowds: Peak
Peak until it abruptly is not. The holidays run to the end of the month, so the beaches, islands and villages stay full, and two specific weekends make things worse in specific places: the motor-racing weekend on the coast and the student introduction week in the north. The final days of the month are the best-value few nights of the entire summer.
Prices: Priciest
Still at the top, with sharp local spikes. The Grand Prix weekend at the coastal circuit lifts hotel prices across Haarlem and turns two ordinary bus routes into circuit shuttles. Island accommodation in the holiday weeks is the single hardest thing to book in the Netherlands, harder than the ferry, which cannot be reserved at all.

The Dutch Grand Prix

The race weekend spikes Haarlem hotel prices and converts buses 300 and 356 into circuit shuttles. Either book it deliberately and enjoy it, or make sure your beach day is not that Saturday.
Sea lavender at De Slufter
Summer, peaking in high summerA tidal valley in the dunes that turns purple when the sea lavender flowers, on a walk of roughly four kilometres. It is the one thing on the island that has a genuine season rather than simply better weather.
What to skip in August
Things that are worth the trip in another month and are not worth it in this one.
- The northern student city in the middle of the month unless you want that energy. The university introduction week fills the centre with parties, rooms become scarce and the noise runs late.
- Booking an island bed at short notice. Summer holiday accommodation is the real constraint out there, and a few weeks of lead time is the local minimum for a spring or summer weekend.
- Assuming the last week is like the rest. It is not, and if your dates are flexible by seven days, moving them later is the cheapest upgrade available in the whole summer.
What to pack, and the verdict

The July list, with better swimming prospects and a slightly stronger case for an evening layer as the month goes on. If you are going to a festival, take something waterproof to sit on; Dutch grass in August has usually been rained on within the last day, whatever the sky is currently doing.
Should you come in August?
August is July with warmer water and a better ending. For families tied to school dates it is the obvious month, and it delivers: the sea is at its best, the festival calendar is full and nothing seasonal has closed yet. For everyone else the interesting move is the last week, when prices and pressure both drop while the weather has barely changed. Watch out for the two local spikes — the race weekend on the coast and the introduction week up north — and it is a straightforwardly good month.
