The sunniest month on record, mild and long, with April's crowd mostly gone.
The best-behaved month of the year. Averages reach the high teens by day, the sun is up for close to sixteen hours, and the month records more sunshine than July does. Everything is green, nothing is stifling, and the light in the evening goes on so long that dinner outdoors stops being a gamble. The country is at its most photogenic without being at its most crowded, which is a combination the other eleven months cannot offer. If a single month had to represent the Netherlands to somebody who had never been, it would be this one.

How busy, and what it costs
The two things that change most across the Dutch year, and the two most people plan around.
Crowds: Busy
Busy without being oppressive. The tulip surge subsides once the gardens close in the first half of the month, and the summer holiday wave has not started, so the middle weeks sit in a genuine gap. The exceptions are the movable religious holidays — Ascension and Pentecost are historically the two heaviest days of the year in Giethoorn, and they distort a normal weekend everywhere.

Below April, above September, and worth it. In The Hague this is one of the two sweet spots where mild weather and queue-free museums arrive together with rates that sit under the summer peak. Book earlier than you would for autumn: the long weekends created by those movable holidays absorb a lot of inventory very quickly.

Keukenhof closes
9 May in the 2027 seasonThe gardens shut for eleven months in the first half of the month. Late April into early May is still a good visit if the manicured park is what you want; the surrounding fields have usually been cut by then.
The Japanese garden at Clingendael
About six weeks from MayOne of the shortest opening windows in the country, protected because the moss cannot take footfall. There is a brief autumn window too, but if you want it, May is when to plan for it. Do not build a trip around it outside those dates.
Beach and cycling season opens
May through SeptemberTexel, Zandvoort and the Wadden coast
The island window runs May to September, with late spring the sweet spot at roughly fifteen to twenty-five degrees, everything open and noticeably fewer people than the school holidays will bring.
What to skip in May
Things that are worth the trip in another month and are not worth it in this one.
- Assuming a Thursday is a working day. Two of the movable Christian holidays fall in May most years, and the Fridays attached to them empty offices and fill trains, boats and every popular village.
- The gardens after the closing date. There is no soft ending — the gates shut, the seasonal buses stop, and the fields have been beheaded. Redirect to a farm that welcomes visitors, or to the signposted bike loop through the bulb belt.
- Underdressing for the water. Air at eighteen degrees and a North Sea that is still cold is the classic May miscalculation on a beach day.
What to pack, and the verdict
Packing
Less than you think. A light jacket, one warm layer for the evening, and sunglasses that stay on your face in wind. Sun cream is not optional despite the latitude — sixteen hours of daylight on a cycle path burns people who assumed the Netherlands was too far north to bother. Swimwear only if you are genuinely brave about sea temperature.
Should you come in May?
If you can travel whenever you like and you want one recommendation, take the middle of May. It has the sunshine numbers of high summer, the daylight of high summer and neither the school-holiday crowds nor the peak-season rates. The two caveats are the flowers, which have finished, and the long weekends, which need looking up. Otherwise this is the month that makes the whole country work at once: cities, coast, islands and cycling, all open, all pleasant, all still bookable a few weeks out.
