A former naval storehouse on Kattenburgerplein housing the national maritime collection, plus a replica VOC ship you can board.

The replica of the Amsterdam is the draw and children go straight for it, but the atlases, figureheads and whaling material upstairs carry the actual story of how a small wet country ran a global trade network. The glass-roofed courtyard alone justifies stepping inside. It is a short walk from NEMO, so the two pair well on one eastern-islands afternoon.

Highlights

  • Boardable VOC replica ship
  • Glass-roofed courtyard
  • Strong with children

Insider tips

  • Board the ship first; the queue for it builds after lunch.
  • Walk to NEMO afterwards rather than doubling back into the centre.
