Walking the estate costs nothing and it opens at eight in the morning and stays open until half past seven at night, all year — which makes it the obvious pairing for anyone who arrives on the first bus, or who came in a month when the show garden is shut. There are marked walking routes, a dahlia garden that peaks in late summer rather than spring, and a farmhouse restaurant. The house itself is a different proposition: guided tours only, Wednesdays and Thursdays, booked ahead, in Dutch.
