The green copper hull rising out of the water above the IJ tunnel, and the most reliable rainy-day answer for families.

Everything inside is meant to be pulled, pressed or built. Chain reactions, a bridge you assemble yourself, a chemistry lab with real reagents. Older children get more out of it than the under-fives. The stepped roof terrace is free to walk up even without a ticket and gives one of the best free views over the old harbour.

Highlights

  • Hands-on across five floors
  • Free rooftop terrace
  • Works in bad weather

Insider tips

  • Walk up to the roof terrace even if you skip the ticket.
  • Normally shut on Mondays outside school holidays and the summer season.

Do I need to book NEMO Science Museum ahead?
For weekends, holidays and spring travel, yes. The Netherlands is easy to navigate, but high-demand tickets and good time slots sell out first.
