Noorderplantsoen

The old city ramparts, now the park everyone lies down in.

Where a student city goes to do nothing, laid out along the line of the defences it replaced.

The shape of the park is the shape of the walls that used to be here: a curving belt of grass, water and mature trees following the old defensive line around the north-west of the centre. From the first warm week of the year it fills up with people doing very little, which is most of the point. It is free and unfenced, an easy walk or a shorter ride from the market square, and it is the counterweight to a night on Poelestraat.

Highlights

  • Built on the old walls
  • Free and open
  • Ten minutes from the centre

Insider tips

  • The walled Prinsentuin, with a tearoom, is the quiet alternative if this one is busy.
  • Cafes here open around 10:00 like the rest of the city, so it is not an early-breakfast plan.

Do I need to book Noorderplantsoen ahead?
For weekends, holidays and spring travel, yes. The Netherlands is easy to navigate, but high-demand tickets and good time slots sell out first.
