Hendrik Mesdag painted the fishing village as it looked before the hotels, and the illusion still works: real sand and beach debris run from the platform to the base of the canvas, so the eye cannot find the join. It is the oldest surviving panorama anywhere in its original setting, which is the sort of claim that usually deflates on arrival and here does not.
