Autumn arriving in a hurry. The averages fall to the mid teens, the sunshine total halves against August, and the wind returns as a daily consideration rather than an occasional one. What replaces the warmth is atmosphere: wet leaves on brick, low gold light in the late afternoon, café windows that are worth sitting behind. Then the clocks go back on the last Sunday and the evening collapses by an hour overnight, which is the single sharpest transition in the Dutch year and catches out anyone who booked a late outdoor plan.

How busy, and what it costs

The two things that change most across the Dutch year, and the two most people plan around.

Crowds: Busy

Quiet in general and violently busy in particular. There is no broad tourist crowd, but the festival calendar concentrates enormous numbers into specific cities on specific weeks, and a city hosting one of them behaves like Amsterdam in April. Away from those dates the museums are as calm as they were in September.

Prices: Middling

Middling and event-driven. Amsterdam room rates spike for the dance event week the way they do for New Year, and the design festival does the same to the southern technology city. Outside those weeks this is affordable shoulder season, so the planning job is entirely about knowing which weeks to dodge or to target.

Eindhoven

The single best reason to visit the southern technology city, spread across old Philips factory halls and the wider town. Rooms disappear for it, so decide early and recheck the official dates before committing.

Party tickets are announced from July and the whole city prices accordingly. One of the handful of Amsterdam weeks where booking early is not advice but a requirement.

Leidens Ontzet

2 and 3 October

Leiden

The city commemorates the lifting of its 1574 siege by shutting down and holding an enormous street festival. Free bread and herring are handed out at the Waag, and hutspot in the evening. Come for the chaos or pick another week.

The windmill-village seasonal bus stops on 18 October in 2026, the high season at the mills near Rotterdam runs to 1 November, the tower climb and the antiques market both end their windows, and the boat-village day tours largely stop after this month.

What to skip in October

Things that are worth the trip in another month and are not worth it in this one.

Turning up in Leiden on the second or third without knowing. One resident's advice is blunt: stay away unless you actively want a full-on street festival, because the museums you came for will be unreachable.
Planning around the marathon Sunday in the technology city, which closes the main art museum and clogs the centre — the same museum shut by carnival Saturday earlier in the year.
Leaving anything outdoors until after the clock change. The last Sunday takes an hour off the evening, and a five o'clock plan that worked all month suddenly happens in the dark.

What to pack, and the verdict

Packing

A proper coat again, with the hood back in service. Waterproof shoes rather than optimistic ones. Something for the wind, which is now a permanent feature rather than an occasional one. If you are going to the light festivals in the following month or the design week in this one, an extra warm layer for standing still outdoors after dark.

Should you come in October?

October is two different months depending on your dates. Pick a festival week deliberately and it is one of the most interesting times to be in the country, with a cultural density nothing in summer matches. Pick a random week and it is a calm, cheap, atmospheric shoulder month with excellent museum conditions. Pick badly and you arrive in a city that is full for a reason nobody told you about. Look up the calendar first and this month rarely disappoints.

Not for cities, and not for the first three weeks outdoors. Our editors rate it alongside September for calm canals and good museum weather. What it is too late for is anything that depends on a season: the mills, the boats, the tower climbs and the beach infrastructure all wind down across these four weeks.

+How much do the festivals affect prices?

A great deal, but only where the festival is. A room in Eindhoven during design week, or in Amsterdam during dance week, behaves like a room at New Year: scarce, expensive and booked months out. Two provinces away nothing has moved at all, which is why a badly timed city can be swapped rather than a whole trip cancelled.

+When do the clocks change?

On the last Sunday, when the country falls back to Central European Time. Sunset moves an hour earlier overnight. It is worth planning the final week of the month around: put the outdoor things in the mornings and let the museums and cafés take the afternoons.
