Trains, OVpay and transport passes

Tap-in rules, airport trains, city cards and when regional passes help.

The simplest setup

For many visitors, OVpay is enough: tap in and out with the same contactless card or phone. It works across much of Dutch public transport.

The rule people miss

Always tap out. If you switch between operators or modes, follow the gate and reader instructions carefully. The same card or phone must be used for check-in and check-out.

When a pass helps

A city card or regional travel ticket can be worth it when your itinerary has multiple included attractions or several regional moves in one to three days. It is not automatically cheaper than OVpay.

Airport transfers

The train is usually fastest from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Leiden, Delft and The Hague. Taxis are useful for heavy luggage, late arrivals and hotels far from stations.

Bike rental

Cycling is a privilege, not a visitor requirement. Rent bikes for parks, guided routes or calm neighborhoods first. Avoid stopping in bike lanes and do not walk in them for photos.
