There is no wandering up. Every ascent goes with one of the tower's own guides, the climb takes about an hour, and the stair is a narrow stone spiral that genuinely asks for reasonable fitness: 465 steps, a whispering gallery partway, and 112 metres of tower standing over the square. Slots go in season, so this is booked before you travel rather than at the desk on the day. Tours leave from the tourist information centre at Domplein 9, not from the foot of the tower itself.
