Rietveld Schröder House

The only building De Stijl ever fully realised, and it is tiny.

A UNESCO-listed 1924 house at the end of a terrace, visited on a timed tour of roughly half an hour.

Rietveld built it with Truus Schröder rather than for her, and the upper floor has no fixed walls: sliding panels turn one open room into three bedrooms and back again at night. Everything you have seen reproduced — the primary colours, the cantilevered planes, the red-blue chair — is here at domestic scale, which is the surprise. Numbers per tour are small and the slots go early, so this is one of the few things in Utrecht that genuinely has to be booked before you travel.

Highlights

  • UNESCO World Heritage
  • Sliding walls on the upper floor
  • Small timed tours only

Insider tips

  • The house's own guidance is thirty to forty minutes inside, so do not block out an afternoon.
  • Book well ahead. Tour groups are small and this is the constraint on a Utrecht day.

FAQ

Do I need to book Rietveld Schröder House ahead?
For weekends, holidays and spring travel, yes. The Netherlands is easy to navigate, but high-demand tickets and good time slots sell out first.
Is this a good first-time visitor choice?
Yes, if it matches your route. We prioritize listings that solve a real planning problem, have clear visitor logistics and can be booked or verified before arrival.
