Hals painted the militia companies of this city for forty years and the results hang together here in a way no other museum can reproduce, ending with the two regent portraits made when he was in his eighties and dependent on the town. The setting matters: the museum occupies a seventeenth-century old men's almshouse, which is where Hals spent his last years. A second site nearer the Grote Markt shows modern and contemporary work under the same name.
