An eighteenth-century Enlightenment collection of fossils, instruments and drawings, still lit from above by daylight.
Opened in 1784 and never modernised in the way museums usually are, so the Oval Room still has its original cases, its original labels and no electric light — on a dark afternoon you see less, which is exactly the historical condition. Fossils, minerals, an enormous electrostatic generator and a drawings cabinet holding Michelangelo and Rembrandt sheets share the same rooms. It is a museum about what it was like to be curious in 1784, and there is nothing else like it.
