Historic Delfshaven

The quarter the bombing missed, and the quay the Pilgrims left from.

Last updated June 12, 2026

A surviving stretch of seventeenth-century quayside west of the centre, with a distillery, a windmill and canal-side terraces.

Everyone arrives in Rotterdam expecting concrete and glass, and this is the counter-argument: gabled warehouses along a working basin, the Pelgrimvaderskerk from which the Speedwell sailed in 1620, and De Distilleerketel turning above it all. There is nothing to book and no ticket to buy. Come for the hour before dinner, take the metro to Delfshaven rather than walking from the centre, and treat the terraces on the Voorhaven as the reason you came.

Highlights

  • Free to wander at any hour
  • Pilgrim Fathers' departure quay
  • Canal-side terraces

Insider tips

  • Metro to Delfshaven — it is too far west to fold into a centre walk.
  • Individual museums and the distillery keep their own hours; the quarter itself never closes.
