Sint-Servaasbasiliek and its Treasury

The oldest church in the Netherlands, over the grave it was built for.

A Romanesque basilica on the Vrijthof raised above the tomb of Saint Servatius, with a treasury of medieval reliquaries.

Servatius was buried on this spot in the fourth century and the building grew around the grave over the next seven hundred years, which makes it the oldest church in the country by a wide margin and explains why the crypt feels older than everything above it. The treasury is the real find: enamelled reliquaries, the saint's bust in silver gilt, and a pectoral cross that the labels date to the sixth century. It opens every day, which few things in Maastricht do.
