Centraal Museum

The city's own collection, and the keeper of the Rietveld archive.

Last updated June 12, 2026

Utrecht art from the medieval period to De Stijl, including the largest Gerrit Rietveld holding anywhere.

The oldest municipal museum in the country covers a lot of ground — a twelfth-century Viking ship dug out of the Vecht, altarpieces from before the iconoclasm, Utrecht Caravaggisti, and then a jump to Rietveld's furniture and models. If the Schröder House is on your list this is where you buy the combined ticket and where the archive that explains the house actually lives, so the order matters: museum first, house second.

Highlights

  • Largest Rietveld collection
  • Utrecht Caravaggisti
  • A medieval boat found in the Vecht

Insider tips

  • No Monday opening; the doors also stay shut for New Year's Day, King's Day and Christmas.
  • Do this before the Schröder House, not after — the context is here.

Do I need to book Centraal Museum ahead?
