Overall risk
The Netherlands is generally safe for visitors. The realistic risks are pickpocketing, bike-lane collisions, alcohol or drug-related judgment, canal accidents and travel disruption.
Bike lanes
Red pavement is often a bike lane. Look both ways before crossing, do not stand in the lane for photos, and listen for bells. Locals commute fast.
Pickpockets
Use normal city caution around Amsterdam Centraal, busy trams, Damrak, major museums, markets and nightlife streets. Keep phones and wallets secured, especially while distracted by luggage.
Canals and nightlife
Canals are beautiful but dangerous when mixed with alcohol or drugs. Stay away from edges late at night and keep groups together.
Emergency numbers
Call 112 for police, ambulance or fire emergencies. For non-emergency police assistance, use the Dutch police non-emergency channels.
